Intaglio -The Science of Treating Acne |
Acne is a skin disorder that is common and highly treatable - Left untreated, acne can lead to scars and unnecessary psychological misery. An inflammatory skin condition characteriized by superficial skin eruptions which occur when sebaceous glands within the hair folicles (pores) of the skin become plugged. Hormones, (androgens), heredity, stress, humidity, bacteria and increased sebum production are often contributing factors. Sun exposure can aggravate all these factors. Sebum production is stimulated in the hair folicle and bacteria can begin to grow, causing an infection resulting in the development of a pimple. Eruptions range from comedones, papules, pustules and cysts. Acne affects 17 million people and is the most common skin condition treated in the US. 40%-50% of women between 20 - 40 experience some form of acne.Acne is linked to hormones in women most commonly between the ages of 13 - 40 as hormonal fluctuations affect the sebaceous glands especially before and during menstruation. Starting of and stopping of oral contraceptive and pregnancy create hormonal flucuations as well.Acne considerations for ethnic skin defines more oil glands in Asian, African, African-American and Indian skin than in Caucasian skin. In addition the statum corneum is denser ( thinner yet, with more cells ). The inflammatory reactions tend to be more severe with a greater risk of scarring. The inflammatory response causes stimulation of pigment production.AHA Glycolic and Salicylic Acid are considered the newest and most effective treatment available. While the removal of cells with glycolic acid keeps the follicles clear and open, the anti-bacterial properties of salicylic acid prevents infection. |

Recommended for oily or acne prone skin. An antibacterial gel cleanser (2% Salylic Acid) that assists penetration into the pores, reducing bacteria and excess oil. Effective in controlling blemishes and acne while improving the skins tone and texture. Apply a small amount to face and neck. Massage gently into skin using circular movements. Rinse off thoroughly with water and pat dry.

Recommended for all skin types (Normal to oily combination) A highly effective acne astringent which combines 2% salicylic acid with 10% glycolic acid. This powerful double action blend of glycolic and salicylic resurfaces dead cells, deep cleanses the pores and controls oily secretions which in turn will prevent acne breakouts and reduce inflammation. pH 3.5 - 4.0 Apply to clean dry face using dry cotton or gauze. Work into oily affected areas and gently pat over any breakouts. Once skin becomes clearer, you may use once a day for maintenance.
