90% of the visual affects of aging are due to sun exposure and of that 70% of all sun damage is from casual exposure mostly occuring before the age of 18. Skin cancer rates have reached epidemic proportions in the U.S. with more than one million new cases reported yearly and more than 7000 deaths attributible to skin cancer this year alone. Skin cancer is no doubt on the rise and appears in several forms:
  • Solar Keratoses, flat, scaly, reddish patches caused by overexposure.Usually developing in the head, shoulders and shins of middle aged people.These lesions can turn into Squamous Cell cancer.
  • Basal Cell - comprising 75% of all skin cancers
  • Squamous Cell - a tumor type that can spread, comprising 20% of skin cancers
  • Malignant Melanoma - the most agressively spreading and most deadly form, comprising 2-5% of skin cancers

Look for these signs

  • Asymmetrical shape
  • An irregular border
  • Inconsistant color
  • Diameter larger than a pencil eraser
Tanning beds greatly increase the likelyhood of skin cancer. 15-30 minutes in a tanning bed equals all day spent in the sun. The UV rays absorbed during a tanning session are 20x stronger than those of the sun. UVA burns the skin as well as the eyes and it's radiation may be related to melanoma induction and growth and definately causes pre-mature aging. UVA radiation can also produce non-melanoma skin cancers, alter immune system functions, and photosensitive drug reactions. Sunscreen recommendations include keeping infants under 6 months out of the direct sun completely and beginning application at 6 months..Sunscreen should be applied 20 minutes before exposure and reapplied often as water-proof and non water-proof sunscreens are both photo-chemically consumed at the same rate. Avoid the sun between the hours of 10am -4pm., wearing a 4" brimmed hat, using SPF 15 daily. Sunscreens scatter, reflect and absorb UV rays, the higher the SPF the more irritaion to the skin. The photo-protection of higher sunscreens (SPF 35 for example) provide only 2-3% more protection than SPF 15 sunscreens, and are confusing as the numbers aren't proportionate. SPF 15 absorbs 93% sunburning rays while SPF 30 on absorbs only 97%.
