90% of the visual affects of aging are due to sun exposure and of that 70% of all sun damage is from casual exposure mostly occuring before the age of 18. Skin cancer rates have reached epidemic proportions in the U.S. with more than one million new cases reported yearly and more than 7000 deaths attributible to skin cancer this year alone. Skin cancer is no doubt on the rise and appears in several forms:
Look for these signs
Sunscreen recommendations include keeping infants under 6 months out of the direct sun completely and beginning application at 6 months..Sunscreen should be applied 20 minutes before exposure and reapplied often as water-proof and non water-proof sunscreens are both photo-chemically consumed at the same rate. Avoid the sun between the hours of 10am -4pm., wearing a 4" brimmed hat, using SPF 15 daily. Sunscreens scatter, reflect and absorb UV rays, the higher the SPF the more irritaion to the skin. The photo-protection of higher sunscreens (SPF 35 for example) provide only 2-3% more protection than SPF 15 sunscreens, and are confusing as the numbers aren't proportionate. SPF 15 absorbs 93% sunburning rays while SPF 30 on absorbs only 97%. |
